"Urging young people to read more when there is little available to read makes as much sense as urging starving people to eat, when no food is available." -Krashen, 2007
Bernie's Distribution Programs
Distribution partnerships are strategically forged with schools and/or programs serving large populations of at-risk children with the understanding that books will be distributed to every child at least twice a year. Bernie's Book Bank distribution partners value how easy we make it for them. Books arrive at each facility or school "distribution ready." This is an essential part of our program as it assures the quick transfer of books to the children who desperately want and need them, causing no extra burden to our distribution partners!
WIC (Women, Infant, Children) Bernie's Book Buddies
WIC is a national program administered by the Health Department which provides nutrition education, heath care referrals, breastfeeding support and vouchers for nutritious supplemental foods at no cost to families whose income is 185% or less of the federal poverty level and have children under 5 years old.
Through the WIC Bernie's Book Buddies program, children will receive 6 quality books at each visit (at least twice a year). The objective of this program is to increase the interaction with books among at-risk infants and toddlers, enhancing their chances of being kindergarten-ready! Being kindergarten-ready is one of the most important factors influencing long-term academic success. In fact, the trajectory of a high school drop out begins in kindergarten!
School Distribution Partnerships
This program is designed to support at-risk, school-age children (up to 6th grade). Every child in qualified schools receives 6 age-appropriate books in a bag at least twice per year (12 books a year)! The objective of this program is to support the hard work being done in these schools to improve literacy by insuring that all children go home to good quality reading material. In providing 12 books per year to each child, we not only provide them with the reading material to galvanize their love for reading, but create "book ambassadors" for a lifetime. It has been said that an abundance of books in the home is more important than both parents' educational levels.
