What is Chautauqua? We’re glad you asked!
Chautauqua (pronounced: ʃəˈtɔːkwə) is an adult education movement in the United States, highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s. The Chautauqua brought entertainment and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, preachers and specialists of the day.
It is important to us as a Foundation to host events/fundraisers that exemplify quality, value, meaning and integrity and which take on their own identity and character . Our inaugural “Children’s Chautauqua in the Park”, held Sunday June 7th, 2009 was a wonderful addition to this tradition!
In this age of “WII” and “X-Box” and all of the “monitor stimulation” impeding the intellectual growth of the children of today, we thought it pertinent to start our own “Children’s Chautauqua Movement”. Therefore, our vision for “Children’s Chautauqua in the Park” was to create an “interactive-outdoor place of enrichment” for the whole family, especially children!
As demonstrated by the above photo’s, the Children’s Chautauqua in the Park did just that and was met with great enthusiasm by young and old alike. We look forward to growing this valuable community event and Foundation fundraiser.
We want to thank all attendees, volunteers (especially Warren Township FBLA), performers and activity captains for making this day and event so special!
We look forward to seeing all of you at an even more exciting 2010 “Children’s Chautauqua in the Park” –stay tuned for details-until then, make every day one of discovery and learning!
