NCCP/ AJ Katzenmaier Elementary School-December 15th

The Mission Bernie's Book Bank facilitates the collection, processing and redistribution of quality new & gently used children's books so as to significantly increase BOOK OWNERSHIP among at-risk infants, toddlers and school age children living throughout Chicagoland.

Bernie's Book Bank is Chicagoland's collection, processing and distribution center for quality un-utilized children's books!  Our objective is to continuously pour quality children's books into "at-risk" homes and neighborhoods, increasing book OWNERSHIP.  By doing so,

  • economically disadvantaged children are exposed to books from birth!
  • we support the fragile fledgling love for reading of school-age children with quality book ownership at home!

Sustainable   It has been said that having books in the home is twice as important as a father's educational level. In every successful home where children reside you will find an  abundance of books.  Therefore, the children we serve receive 6 quality books at a time and a minimum of 12 books a year.

Green  We do not spend a penny on books!  All the books we distribute are either quality previously owned books or brand-new surplus books.  In other words, Bernie's Book Bank distributes books whose fate would otherwise have been the garbage.  Adult books get "passed along" all the time, why not children's books?

Economical  Because we believe in "READ, REUSE, RECYCLE," we can collect, process and distribute quality  books for pennies on the dollar.  In fact, every $3 we receive allows us to collect, process and distribute two bags of quality books to a child who has none!
